Columbia Valley AVA
Located about 6 miles east of the Dalles on the Washington side of the Columbia River, Avery Vineyard lies at the mouth of the Gorge. The Zinfandel grown in this vineyard is greatly influenced by its southern exposure and the “wind tunnel” that split the Cascades at the Washington-Oregon border. Moist air from the Pacific Ocean is exchanged with drier inland air from the east, creating conditions that are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The vines are rooted in soil accumulated from wind, floods, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. Precipitation is about 10 inches a year in this area. These harsh conditions produce fruit with great structure and intense character.
